A recent five-week training intervention, detailed in the journal Scientific Reports, has shown that college students can learn to better regulate their emotions in response to negative events. The study, led by University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign
psychology professors Sanda and Florin Dolcos and Kelly Hohl from the Phoenix VA Healthcare Center, found that participants reported less emotional distress when viewing negative images or recalling difficult personal experiences after the training. Brain scans conducted on these students revealed corresponding changes in the spontaneous functional connectivity of their brains. The intervention built upon a 2021 study involving veterans and focused on two emotion-regulation strategies: focusing attention on neutral contextual features of negative events and cognitive reappraisal, which involves reinterpreting distressing memories or images in a more positive light. The college students engaged in these exercises twice weekly and were encouraged to apply the techniques in their daily lives, demonstrating that emotional resilience can be developed through targeted training.
