The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is actively exploring significant changes to the Emergency Alert System (EAS), specifically considering allowing participants, including radio and TV stations, to use software-based encoder/decoder technology
instead of dedicated hardware. This initiative stems from a request by the National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) and aims to modernize EAS, which currently relies heavily on standalone hardware. The FCC acknowledges that some existing requirements are based on outdated assumptions, and a shift towards IP-centric architectures in the industry necessitates a review.
