What's Happening?
BHP Group and POSCO have entered into a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on advancing hydrogen-based ironmaking technology. This partnership aims to decarbonize the steel sector by focusing on POSCO's HyREX process, which utilizes hydrogen in fluidized
bed reactors and an electric smelting furnace to produce direct reduced iron. The collaboration will involve technical expertise sharing and trials using BHP's Pilbara iron-ore at POSCO's HyREX demonstration plant in Pohang, South Korea. The plant is set to be the first to integrate hydrogen-based FBR technology with an ESF at scale.
