Rep. Kim Schrier (D-Wash.), a pediatrician and the first doctor elected to Congress, has publicly criticized Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for contributing to a growing distrust in vitamin K shots for newborns. According to a press release from her office, Schrier stated
that Kennedy's spread of misinformation has led to parents refusing the essential vitamin K shot and other routine care, putting infants at risk of deadly brain bleeds. She termed this phenomenon the 'RFK Jr. Spillover Effect.' Data from Truveta, a health and data analytics company, indicates a 57.4% increase in vitamin K shot refusals in the first half of the year, with 8.1% of births not having documented receipt of the shot by June. The CDC emphasizes that a single vitamin K shot at birth protects babies from dangerous bleeding, which can lead to brain damage or death, making babies 81 times more likely to experience life-threatening bleeding without it. In July, Schrier, alongside Sen. Angela Alsobrooks (D-Md.), called on public health officials to release data on vitamin K refusal rates.
