An international team of researchers, led by the University of Oxford, has identified the largest known rotating structure in space using data from South Africa’s MeerKAT radio telescope. This structure, a filament of galaxies, stretches across 50 million
light-years and contains 280 galaxies. Within this filament, 14 galaxies are arranged in a 'razor-thin' string measuring 5.5 million light-years long and 117,000 light-years across. The discovery reveals that many of these galaxies rotate in the same direction as the filament itself, suggesting a significant influence on the spin of galaxies. This finding provides new insights into the formation and evolution of galaxies, as well as the role of dark matter, which is believed to constitute 85% of the universe's mass.
