What's Happening?
TheDream.US has initiated a new social media storytelling campaign titled “What Will I Do When The Dream Act Passes?” The campaign features Dreamers from across the United States sharing their aspirations and the potential stability and opportunities
that permanent protections, afforded by the Dream Act, would bring to their careers, families, and communities. This initiative stems from a symbolic graduation event in Washington, D.C., where Scholars and Alumni of TheDream.US were asked to complete the sentence: “when the Dream Act passes, I will…” The organization plans to release a new story each week, illustrating how permanent protections could enable Dreamers and the nation to further build upon their existing contributions. Gaby Pacheco, President and CEO of TheDream.US, emphasized that these stories highlight not just future hopes, but the significant contributions Dreamers are already making as teachers, attorneys, engineers, and entrepreneurs, and how much more they could achieve with greater stability.
Why It's Important?
This campaign is important because it aims to humanize the debate surrounding the Dream Act and immigration policy in the U.S. By showcasing personal stories and the tangible contributions of Dreamers, TheDream.US seeks to influence public opinion and legislative action. The campaign underscores the economic and social benefits that Dreamers already provide to their communities and the nation, suggesting that granting them permanent legal status would unlock even greater potential. This could lead to increased workforce participation, higher tax revenues, and stronger communities, benefiting various sectors of the U.S. economy and society. Conversely, the continued lack of permanent protections creates uncertainty for these individuals and potentially limits their ability to fully contribute, representing a missed opportunity for national growth and development.
What's Next?
TheDream.US will continue to release new stories weekly as part of the “What Will I Do When The Dream Act Passes?” series, utilizing platforms like Instagram, LinkedIn, and Facebook. The organization is also inviting current and former Dreamers to contribute their own videos or submissions, expanding the reach and impact of the campaign. This ongoing effort aims to maintain momentum and public discourse around the Dream Act, particularly as it has been 25 years since the legislation was first introduced. The campaign's success will likely be measured by its ability to garner increased public support and pressure on lawmakers to consider and pass the Dream Act, potentially leading to legislative discussions and actions in the near future.
Beyond the Headlines
Beyond the immediate legislative goal, this campaign touches upon deeper societal implications regarding immigration, identity, and the American dream. It highlights the ethical considerations of allowing individuals who have grown up in the U.S. and contributed to its society to live in a state of perpetual uncertainty. The campaign also implicitly challenges narratives that may portray immigrants solely as burdens, instead emphasizing their roles as active and valuable members of the workforce and community. By focusing on individual aspirations and achievements, it seeks to foster a more empathetic understanding of the Dreamer population, potentially influencing broader cultural attitudes towards immigration and citizenship in the long term.
