What's Happening?
Tanzania is set to construct nine comprehensive cancer centers across six strategic zones in mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar by 2030. This initiative aims to significantly enhance cancer prevention, diagnosis, and treatment capabilities within the country,
positioning Tanzania as a regional hub for cancer care and training. According to Tanzanian Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, speaking on behalf of President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Scientific Forum in Vienna, government investment has already expanded cancer services from primary to specialized healthcare levels. The coverage of the single-dose human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine for girls aged 9 to 14 has increased from 58 percent in 2018 to 98 percent in 2026. Additionally, the number of radiotherapy centers has grown from three in 2020 to six in 2026, boosting access to radiotherapy services from 14 percent to 26 percent and benefiting approximately 6,500 patients. Tanzania has also adopted advanced cancer diagnosis technology, becoming one of the first 10 African countries to utilize a PET-CT scanner linked to a cyclotron.
