What's Happening?
Leicester City Council has announced the launch of its annual Christmas lights event, set to illuminate a 44-foot tree and feature three separate switch-on events. The festivities will commence on November 19, with a program that includes music, a flash
mob, street entertainment, and a funfair. The main Christmas decorations, including the Town Hall Square lights and Clock Tower tree, will be the first to light up. The event will feature cast members from the De Montfort Hall pantomime, 'Dick Whittington,' who will flick the switch at 18:30 GMT. They will be joined by Father Christmas, Leicester City mascot Filbert Fox, and BBC Radio Leicester's Ady Dayman. Additional events include the lighting of the Haymarket shopping centre and Highcross Leicester lights, as well as a festive fairground and an extended ice rink season.
Why It's Important?
The Christmas lights event is a significant cultural occasion for Leicester, marking the start of the festive season and drawing both local residents and visitors to the city. It provides an opportunity for community engagement and supports local businesses by attracting foot traffic to the area. The expanded Christmas market and additional activities like ice skating and seasonal shows are expected to boost the local economy. The event also fosters a sense of community and holiday spirit, offering families and individuals a chance to enjoy festive activities together.
