What's Happening?
Fulton County voters will have the opportunity to vote on extending the current transportation sales tax in the upcoming November elections. The proposed extension involves a 0.75% Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (TSPLOST) that has
been in place since 2017. This tax funds transportation projects in 14 cities within Fulton County, excluding the City of Atlanta. The Fulton County Commission has approved an intergovernmental agreement detailing how the estimated $650 million in revenue will be distributed among the cities. The projects funded by this tax include improvements to local roads, sidewalks, and trails, aimed at enhancing transportation infrastructure and reducing congestion.
Why It's Important?
The extension of the transportation sales tax is significant for Fulton County as it directly impacts infrastructure development and congestion management. The revenue generated from this tax supports essential transportation projects that improve connectivity and accessibility for over 600,000 residents. By investing in infrastructure, the county can enhance economic growth, improve quality of life, and address transportation challenges. The decision to extend the tax reflects a commitment to maintaining and upgrading transportation systems, which is crucial for accommodating future growth and development in the region.
What's Next?
If approved by voters, the transportation sales tax extension will be implemented from April 2027 through March 2032. The outcome of the November referendum will determine the continuation of funding for transportation projects in Fulton County. Local governments and stakeholders will need to collaborate to ensure the effective allocation and utilization of the tax revenue. Public engagement and communication will be essential in garnering support for the extension and ensuring that the funded projects align with community needs and priorities.
