The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has confirmed that two deer found dead in southeastern Wisconsin tested positive for epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD), a fatal virus. These deer were discovered near the village of Richfield and the city
of West Bend. The DNR initiated testing after receiving multiple reports from landowners and the public about a cluster of deceased deer in the area, many of which appeared healthy before death and were found in or near water sources. Reports from WITI-TV indicate that between 80 and 100 deer have been found dead. EHD is transmitted by biting gnats, also known as midges, and does not pose a risk to humans through contact with infected deer, consumption of venison, or midge bites. Clinical signs in deer include excessive salivation, foaming around the nose and mouth, and appearing weak or unusually approachable. Infected deer often seek water to cool down due to fever.
