What's Happening?
Studsvik has announced a strategic partnership with GE Vernova Hitachi and Samsung C&T for the development of a 1.2 GW small modular reactor (SMR) project in Sweden. This project aims to deploy four BWRX-300 SMRs, with the first units expected to come
online from the mid-2030s. GE Vernova Hitachi will be responsible for reactor design, licensing support, and cost estimation, while collaborating with Samsung C&T on project execution. DS Investment Partners, a South Korean investment firm, will lead project investment, and GE Vernova Financial Services will provide advisory and financial structuring support. Studsvik's role will encompass permitting, environmental impact assessments, site rights, community engagement, and discussions with the Swedish government. The exact location for the SMR project is yet to be finalized, with Nyköping or Valdemarsvik being considered. This agreement is a significant step in Studsvik's efforts to expand Sweden's nuclear power capacity, though it does not constitute a final investment decision or authorize construction.
