Luxembourg-based satellite communications startup OQ Technology has successfully sent an emergency broadcast message from its low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites directly to mobile phones on Earth. This marks
the first time a European satellite operator has achieved direct-to-device (D2D) connectivity with cellular devices on the ground. While other companies like Viasat, SpaceX's Starlink, and AST SpaceMobile have previously accomplished D2D connections, OQ Technology's achievement is significant for Europe's development of sovereign D2D capabilities. The company currently operates 10 satellites in LEO and plans to offer emergency messaging services to governments and private enterprises, with future expansions to consumers, governments, and industrial organizations. OQ Technology CEO Omar Qaise emphasized the importance of D2D as a growing market with numerous opportunities.

What's Next?
OQ Technology plans to expand its satellite constellation significantly, aiming to launch 30 additional satellites within the next two years and eventually field a 100-satellite constellation. OQ Technology has already formed partnerships with telecommunications companies such as KPN in the Netherlands and O2 Telefónica in Germany to broaden access to satellite-based IoT networks. The company is also collaborating with Aramco to improve IoT connectivity in remote areas, indicating a strategic focus on expanding its market reach and capabilities.
