What's Happening?
The Maryland State Highway Administration has announced that a portion of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway will be closed for two weekends in Jessup to facilitate a bridge demolition and interchange reconstruction project. The closures will affect Maryland Route
295 ramps at Maryland Route 175. Southbound MD 295 will be closed between Maryland Routes 100 and 32 from April 10 at 10 p.m. until April 13 at 5 a.m. Northbound MD 295 will be closed between Maryland Routes 32 and 100 from April 17 at 10 p.m. until April 20 at 5 a.m. Detours will be in place, directing traffic to MD 100, Interstate 95, and MD 32. The project is part of a larger interchange reconstruction effort scheduled for completion in Fall 2027.
Why It's Important?
The closure of the Baltimore-Washington Parkway is significant as it is a major thoroughfare connecting Baltimore and Washington, D.C. The project aims to improve traffic flow and safety in the area, which is crucial for commuters and travelers, including those heading to Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport. The reconstruction is expected to enhance infrastructure resilience and accommodate future traffic demands. However, the temporary closures may cause inconvenience and delays, highlighting the need for effective traffic management and communication with the public.
What's Next?
The Maryland State Highway Administration will continue to monitor the project and provide updates on any changes to the schedule or additional closures. Motorists are advised to plan their routes in advance and consider alternative north-south routes such as I-95, U.S. Route 1, or I-97. The administration will post signs for detours and work to minimize disruptions. The completion of the interchange reconstruction is anticipated to bring long-term benefits, including reduced congestion and improved safety.
