What's Happening?
A new study published in the open-access journal PLOS Medicine indicates that a digital wellness program effectively reduces symptoms of anxiety and depression in adults living with chronic medical conditions. The program, which includes guided movement,
breathing and meditation exercises, and coping-skills training, was tested in a three-arm randomized controlled trial across 13 countries. Participants with chronic conditions such as Primary Biliary Cholangitis, chronic digestive diseases, cirrhosis, and heart failure showed significant improvements in anxiety and depression scores. The study involved 825 adults and compared a waitlist control group, a self-directed digital program (eMPower), and the same program supplemented with weekly telephone check-ins from trained non-clinicians. Both the self-directed program and the program with human support led to significant improvements in mental health symptoms, as well as improved quality of life and reduced fatigue.
