Researchers at Osaka Metropolitan University have successfully developed a coconut oil-based sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) that can be blended with conventional jet fuel without compromising engine performance. The team utilized a cosolvent method,
combining coconut oil extracts with acetone and alcohol, to produce two biofuels: FAME (from methanol) and FAEE (from ethanol). This method allows for fuel production at ambient temperature and pressure, reducing energy consumption and ensuring purity. Tests conducted using a small turbojet engine showed that while fuel consumption slightly increased with higher biofuel blending ratios due to differences in heating values, thermal efficiency remained comparable to that of conventional Jet A-1 fuel. Crucially, the fuel blend led to a decrease in hydrocarbon emissions, with no significant changes observed in CO2 or NO emissions, which are major contributors to the carbon and nitrogen footprints of airlines. This development offers a promising alternative for the aviation industry to reduce its environmental impact.
