NASA, in collaboration with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), is utilizing advanced technology to locate critical minerals in the American West. The project employs the AVIRIS-5 sensor, a high-tech spectrometer developed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory,
mounted on an ER-2 high-altitude research aircraft. This initiative, part of the GEMx project, aims to identify surface traces of minerals essential for manufacturing consumer electronics and military technology. The AVIRIS-5 sensor detects unique spectral fingerprints of minerals like aluminum, lithium, and titanium, which are vital for technologies such as semiconductors and electric vehicle batteries. The project has already surveyed over 366,000 square miles since 2023, focusing on desert regions where mineral detection is more feasible.
