In Finland, a new sand battery technology has been developed by Polar Night Energy in the town of Pornainen, aiming to reduce reliance on lithium-ion batteries. This sand battery, commissioned by Loviisan Lämpö, can meet the town's heating demands for
up to a month in summer and a week in winter, cutting emissions by 70%. Unlike lithium-ion batteries, which are limited by a four-hour energy storage capacity and supply chain issues dominated by China, the sand battery offers a low-tech, sustainable alternative. It uses sand to store heat, providing a longer-term energy storage solution without the need for rare earth materials.
