What's Happening?
Loblaw Companies, in collaboration with FortisBC Energy and other partners, has initiated the first sustained commercial demonstration of a hydrogen-powered Class 8 truck in British Columbia. This initiative aims to evaluate zero-emission refrigerated
freight operations. The hydrogen truck, supported by FortisBC's Clean Growth Innovation Fund, began service in mid-October and has successfully completed several refrigerated deliveries from the Lower Mainland to Squamish, logging hundreds of kilometers in zero-emission operation. The project is designed to collect data on performance, fueling, and operating conditions to inform future hydrogen vehicle and infrastructure planning for temperature-controlled freight. The truck is leased from HTEC and fueled at HTEC’s Southeast Marine Drive hydrogen station in Vancouver, providing insights into vehicle range, efficiency, and performance.
