What's Happening?
A new study has estimated that approximately 170 million stellar-mass black holes exist within the Milky Way, forming a hidden 'Galactic Underworld.' These black holes are remnants of massive stars that have collapsed after exhausting their fusion fuel.
The study, which involved simulating the Milky Way's history, predicts the distribution and characteristics of these black holes, providing a framework for future observations. The research suggests that black holes are distributed throughout the galaxy, with one black hole per 6,250 cubic parsecs at the Sun's distance from the galactic center. The findings are currently under peer review.
