What's Happening?
The National Nature Conservation Fund has signed agreements with nine local governments in Nepal to promote climate-resilient food crops under the Gandaki River Basin Climate Resilient Project. The agreements,
signed at the Biodiversity Conservation Center in Sauraha, involve local levels from Chitwan, Makwanpur, and Nawalpur. The project aims to enhance food security by mitigating climate change effects through the promotion of certified seeds and sustainable agricultural practices. The initiative is supported by the Green Climate Fund and focuses on developing sustainable agricultural systems by adapting to climate impacts.
Why It's Important?
This initiative is crucial as it addresses the pressing issue of climate change, which poses significant risks to agriculture and food security in Nepal. By promoting climate-resilient crops and sustainable practices, the project aims to safeguard agricultural productivity and ensure food security in the face of rising temperatures and environmental challenges. The involvement of local governments ensures effective implementation and local ownership, which are vital for the success of such initiatives. The project also highlights the importance of international climate finance in supporting developing countries to adapt to climate change.
