What's Happening?
General Dynamics has unveiled the GRIZZLY LAV self-propelled howitzer at the CANSEC 2026 defense exhibition. This new artillery system is Canada's candidate for the Indirect Fires Modernization program, intended to replace the aging M777 towed howitzers.
The GRIZZLY LAV combines a Light Armored Vehicle chassis with a 155mm/L52 gun module, offering enhanced mobility and firepower. Developed in collaboration with German partner KNDS, the system features an automated loader and computerized fire-control system, capable of firing conventional and rocket-assisted projectiles over significant distances. The GRIZZLY LAV is designed for 'shoot-and-scoot' operations, providing mobile indirect fire support for mechanized brigades.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of the GRIZZLY LAV represents a significant advancement in Canada's military capabilities, addressing the need for modern, mobile artillery systems. By integrating domestic production with advanced technology, the GRIZZLY LAV supports local industry and aligns with Canada's defense strategy of utilizing allied equipment. This development enhances Canada's ability to participate in NATO operations and strengthens its defense posture. The GRIZZLY LAV's design reduces crew fatigue and logistical demands, offering a strategic advantage in modern warfare scenarios where mobility and rapid response are crucial.
What's Next?
If selected, the GRIZZLY LAV will be produced in London, Ontario, supporting local manufacturing and supply chain security. This decision will also reflect Canada's broader shift towards allied equipment procurement, moving away from reliance on solely U.S.-made systems. The GRIZZLY LAV's deployment will enhance Canada's military readiness and contribute to its commitments within NATO, particularly in regions like Latvia where mechanized brigades are essential. The ongoing evaluation of the GRIZZLY LAV against other candidates will determine its future role in Canada's defense strategy.
