What's Happening?
AGROSAVIA, Colombia's agricultural research organization, is intensifying its efforts to preserve crop diversity through the Power of Diversity Funding Facility, a multi-donor initiative. This initiative aims to conserve, cultivate, and promote underutilized
crops, known as opportunity crops, to enhance food system resilience. AGROSAVIA's genebank, established in 1994, currently safeguards over 34,000 crop samples crucial to Colombian agriculture. The organization is focusing on two opportunity crops: peach palm and chayote. These crops were selected after consultations with farmers, scientists, and stakeholders, reflecting Colombia's cultural and ecological richness. AGROSAVIA is also analyzing the value chains and food environments of these crops to better understand their journey from farms to consumers.
Why It's Important?
The initiative is significant as it addresses the erosion of crop diversity due to the replacement of traditional varieties with commercial crops, land-use changes, and climate pressures. By preserving crop diversity, AGROSAVIA aims to secure a genetic reservoir that can be used to develop new crop varieties, ensuring food security and agricultural sustainability. The focus on peach palm and chayote highlights the potential of these crops to contribute to resilient food systems. The initiative also underscores the importance of coordinated action across the agricultural system to unlock the potential of these crops, which could lead to new partnerships and investments in Colombia's agroindustry.
What's Next?
AGROSAVIA plans to start a chayote collection to document and conserve its diversity, which currently exists only in farmers' fields. For peach palm, efforts will focus on expanding its collection to secure its diversity against threats like pests and climate stress. The Power of Diversity Funding Facility will also support improvements in genebank management, ensuring that conserved crop diversity remains accessible for future research and development. These efforts are part of a broader strategy to enhance the resilience of field genebanks, which are crucial for conserving certain crop species.
Beyond the Headlines
The initiative highlights the broader challenge of conserving crop diversity in the face of environmental and economic pressures. It emphasizes the need for sustainable conservation practices that not only preserve genetic resources but also promote their use in agriculture. The collaboration between AGROSAVIA and international partners like the Crop Trust demonstrates the importance of global cooperation in addressing food security challenges. The initiative also reflects a growing recognition of the value of underutilized crops in diversifying food systems and supporting local economies.
