What's Happening?
The Oneida County Health Department (OCHD) is organizing a 'You Call the Shots' vaccine clinic at the Hodag Dome on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. This event coincides with Election Day, allowing community members to receive flu and COVID-19 vaccines while
exercising their right to vote. The clinic will operate from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM and will offer walk-in services, meaning no appointments are necessary. The initiative aims to encourage vaccination as flu season approaches and COVID-19 remains a public health concern. The OCHD emphasizes that getting vaccinated helps reduce illness spread, maintains community health, and protects vulnerable populations. Medicare, Medicaid, and several other insurance plans will be accepted, with private pay options also available. For those unable to attend the Hodag Dome clinic, flu and COVID-19 vaccines are also accessible at the OCHD in Rhinelander during regular walk-in hours, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 AM to 4:00 PM.
Why It's Important?
This initiative by the Oneida County Health Department is significant for several reasons. By co-locating a vaccine clinic with a polling station on Election Day, it removes potential barriers to vaccination, such as time constraints or multiple trips, thereby increasing accessibility for residents. This strategy could lead to higher vaccination rates for both influenza and COVID-19, which is crucial for public health as the colder months approach and respiratory illnesses typically surge. Increased vaccination coverage helps to reduce the burden on local healthcare systems, prevent severe illness and hospitalizations, and protect at-risk individuals within the community. Furthermore, by making vaccines readily available, the OCHD is actively promoting community well-being and encouraging civic engagement simultaneously, reinforcing the idea that public health and civic duty are intertwined. The acceptance of various insurance plans and private pay options also ensures that financial barriers to vaccination are minimized for a broad segment of the population.
What's Next?
Following the Election Day clinic, the Oneida County Health Department will continue to offer flu and COVID-19 vaccines at its Rhinelander location during regular walk-in hours. The department will likely monitor vaccination rates and community health metrics to assess the effectiveness of its outreach efforts, including the Election Day clinic. Public health officials will continue to disseminate information regarding vaccine availability and the importance of staying up-to-date with immunizations, especially as new variants or seasonal trends emerge. Community members can stay informed about future clinics and public health updates by checking the Oneida County Facebook page, Instagram (@oneidacountyhealthdept), the official website (www.oneidacountypublichealth.org), or by calling the department directly. The ongoing availability of vaccines and continued public health messaging will be critical in maintaining community protection against respiratory viruses throughout the season.
Beyond the Headlines
The OCHD's decision to host a vaccine clinic on Election Day reflects a broader trend in public health strategies to integrate health services into daily life and civic activities. This approach acknowledges that convenience plays a significant role in health-seeking behaviors. By linking vaccination with voting, the initiative subtly reinforces the idea of collective responsibility—both for civic participation and public health. It also highlights the adaptability of public health agencies in finding innovative ways to reach populations, especially in the wake of lessons learned from previous public health crises. This model could serve as a blueprint for other communities looking to improve vaccine uptake by reducing logistical hurdles and leveraging existing community events. Such integrated approaches can help normalize vaccination as a routine health measure, rather than an extraordinary event, fostering a more resilient and health-conscious community.
