What's Happening?
Orbit Fab has been awarded a contract by the European Space Agency (ESA) and the UK Space Agency to demonstrate in-space refueling capabilities by 2028. The contract, valued at £1.3M ($1.7M), is part of
the ASTRAL mission, co-funded through ESA's ARTES program. The mission aims to develop European capabilities for refueling satellites, using technology developed in Harwell, UK. Orbit Fab's GRASP interface will be used to dock with target spacecraft and transfer propellants like Nitrous Oxide, Ethane, and Xenon. The initiative involves a consortium of European partners, including KISPE Space Systems and Gate Space Innovation.
Why It's Important?
The ASTRAL mission is a significant step towards enhancing Europe's self-reliance in space capabilities, particularly in satellite refueling. This development is crucial for maintaining operational flexibility and extending the lifespan of satellites, which are vital for communication and defense. As geopolitical tensions rise, the ability to refuel satellites in orbit provides strategic advantages, ensuring continuous operation and reducing dependency on external resources. The mission also supports Europe's sovereign defense goals, contributing to the continent's security and technological advancement.
