What's Happening?
The Pendleton City Council has decided to contract with the Bend-based law firm Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis for legal services following the departure of City Attorney Nancy Kerns. This decision was made after a selection committee, which included Kerns and
city department employees who frequently require legal counsel, recommended the firm. Assistant City Manager Chuck Byram, who was part of the selection committee, emphasized the importance of experience and cost in their decision. Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis, established in 1915, has a history of providing legal services to several Oregon municipalities. The firm's experience with the Redmond Municipal Airport was a significant factor in their selection, as it could benefit the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport. The contract, effective July 1, will see the city paying $350 per hour for shareholder attorney services and $300 per hour for associate attorneys.
Why It's Important?
The selection of Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis is significant for Pendleton as it addresses the immediate need for legal services following the departure of the city attorney. The firm's expertise, particularly in municipal and airport-related legal matters, is expected to support Pendleton's growing economic interests, especially with the Eastern Oregon Regional Airport. This decision reflects the city's strategic focus on leveraging specialized legal expertise to enhance its infrastructure and economic development. The cost considerations also highlight the city's commitment to fiscal responsibility while ensuring quality legal representation.
What's Next?
With the contract set to begin on July 1, the city will transition to working with Bryant, Lovlien & Jarvis. The firm will likely begin by familiarizing itself with ongoing legal matters and collaborating with city departments to address any immediate legal needs. The focus will be on ensuring a smooth transition and maintaining continuity in legal services. The city may also explore further opportunities to leverage the firm's expertise in other areas of municipal law, potentially leading to new initiatives or projects that align with Pendleton's economic and infrastructural goals.
