He was also active in community affairs, founding the Oak Park-River Forest Community Foundation and serving on various boards. Follett's passion for the mountains led him to work as a ski guide and climb numerous peaks. He was married to Nancy Crouthamel Follett for over 67 years, and they raised four children together.
