What's Happening?
Edotco Malaysia has successfully deployed a new fixed wireless access (FWA) solution in Uma Lesong, Sarawak, aimed at improving connectivity for underserved communities in challenging geographical areas.
The solution, which combines fiber and LEO satellite backhaul, was first piloted in August 2025. It allows user devices to switch from 4G and 5G to Wi-Fi when out of cellular coverage. Residents now have access to free Wi-Fi internet up to 5GB per user monthly, with affordable top-up options. The initiative addresses severe connectivity challenges faced by the community, which is located in a valley surrounded by dense forest and hills. The project, developed by Edotco and its partner Kejuruteraan Rasshin, is seen as a scalable model for nationwide deployment.
Why It's Important?
This development is significant as it represents a shift in addressing rural connectivity challenges, moving from infrastructure-heavy solutions to smarter, scalable models. By providing reliable internet access, the initiative enhances communication, education, and emergency response capabilities for rural communities. It also sets a precedent for similar projects in other regions, potentially bridging the digital divide and fostering economic and social development. The success of this model could influence policy and investment in rural connectivity solutions, benefiting underserved populations and contributing to national development goals.
What's Next?
The successful implementation in Uma Lesong could lead to broader adoption of similar models across Malaysia and other countries facing similar connectivity challenges. Stakeholders, including government agencies and telecom companies, may explore partnerships to expand this model. The project could also prompt discussions on regulatory support and funding for rural connectivity initiatives. As the model gains traction, it may attract interest from international organizations focused on digital inclusion, potentially leading to collaborative efforts to replicate the success in other regions.
