What's Happening?
The World Economic Forum (WEF), in partnership with the Aliko Dangote Foundation (ADF), has unveiled the 2026 cohort of the Young Global Leaders (YGL) Aliko Dangote Fellows. This initiative aims to spotlight and empower a new generation of African leaders
under 40 who are committed to expanding opportunities and strengthening institutions across the African continent. The Fellowship acts as a crucial link between emerging African changemakers and the global YGL network, fostering collaboration, knowledge exchange, and sustainable development. The 2026 YGL Aliko Dangote Fellows represent diverse professional backgrounds, including healthcare, technology, entrepreneurship, and advocacy, spanning various sub-Saharan African countries. The program supports these high-impact leaders by enabling their full participation in the YGL program and broader WEF activities, providing access to convenings, executive education, peer networks, and global platforms.
Why It's Important?
This fellowship is vital for nurturing leadership and driving sustainable development in Africa. By empowering young African leaders, the program addresses critical challenges such as healthcare, technology, and economic development. The emphasis on women leaders within the cohort further highlights the commitment to inclusive growth and gender equality, recognizing their significant role in shaping the continent's future. The access to global platforms and influential networks provided by the WEF and ADF allows these leaders to amplify African voices on the international stage, influencing global debates on finance, climate, health, technology, and governance. This investment in human capital is seen as a direct path to lasting prosperity, stability, and self-determination for Africa, fostering solutions tailored to the continent's unique context.
What's Next?
The newly announced 2026 YGL Aliko Dangote Fellows will engage in various activities, including participation in WEF Annual Meetings, regional summits, and learning modules. These engagements are designed to accelerate their impact on the continent and globally. The program will continue to cultivate, empower, and support these exceptional leaders, ensuring they have the necessary resources to drive change. Over the past 14 years, the fellowship has supported over 130 young African leaders from more than 25 countries, facilitating over 400 engagements. This ongoing commitment suggests a sustained effort to build a robust network of influential African leaders who can contribute to shaping global agendas and implementing impactful initiatives within their respective fields and regions.
Beyond the Headlines
The Aliko Dangote Foundation's partnership with the WEF in supporting young African leaders signifies a strategic investment in the continent's future. This initiative goes beyond traditional aid models by focusing on capacity building and empowering local leadership, which is crucial for sustainable development. By integrating these leaders into a global network, the program facilitates cross-cultural learning and the exchange of innovative ideas, potentially leading to more effective and context-specific solutions for Africa's challenges. The diversity of professional backgrounds among the fellows underscores a holistic approach to development, recognizing that progress requires expertise across multiple sectors. This model of fostering leadership from within could inspire similar initiatives in other developing regions, promoting self-reliance and strengthening global cooperation.
