A new study, led by researchers at Blood Cancer United, Moffitt Cancer Center, and the University of Florida Health, is investigating the impact of CAR T-cell therapy on fertility in adults who have received the treatment for blood cancer. Preliminary
results from a survey of 106 respondents indicate that six pregnancies occurred among those who attempted to conceive after CAR T-cell therapy, with three resulting in live births and three ongoing at the time of analysis. None of these reported pregnancies involved assisted reproductive technology. CAR T-cell therapy is an immunotherapy that modifies a patient's own immune cells to target and attack cancer cells. While it has shown significant success in treating certain leukemias, lymphomas, and multiple myeloma, its long-term effects on fertility have been less understood, partly because early recipients often had aggressive cancers and extensive prior treatments known to affect fertility.

Researchers plan to continue examining patient experiences, laboratory measures related to fertility, and fertility outcomes in additional groups receiving CAR T-cell therapy. The CAR T-Cell Therapy and Fertility Survey is ongoing, and adults aged 18 and older who have received CAR T-cell therapy for blood cancer are encouraged to participate to help build more comprehensive evidence. Further studies will aim to clarify whether CAR T-cell therapy directly affects fertility, how often it might be affected, and which patients might be most at risk. Additionally, observations from patients receiving CAR T-cell therapy for autoimmune diseases may offer further insights into reproductive health outcomes, as these patients often have different disease and treatment histories.
