What's Happening?
A significant environmental incident occurred at the Port of Tyne, UK, when the WTIV Wind Orca collided with the moored container ship BG Orange. This collision resulted in the damage of several containers, two of which contained plastic nurdles. A substantial
quantity of these tiny plastic beads was released into the water, estimated by the British NGO Fidra to be about one billion. The nurdles have been spotted along the Tyne estuary and the North Sea shore, posing a threat to local wildlife. Efforts to clean up the spill are underway, with the port vacuuming out the wrecked containers and deploying barrier booms to prevent further spread. The operator of Wind Orca has committed additional resources to aid in the cleanup.
