What's Happening?
The Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) showcased its initiatives in smart agriculture, carbon neutrality, and biotechnology at the 2025 X Agriculture Forum
in Taipei. Led by Dr. Mercedita Sombilla, SEARCA presented its 12th Five-Year Development Plan, focusing on transforming regional agriculture through innovation. Key programs include the NTU-SEARCA Joint Scholarship Program and the Rice Straw Biogas Hub, which supports regenerative agriculture. SEARCA also announced upcoming training programs in digital agriculture and precision farming, and highlighted collaborative projects with CIRAD, such as the AquASEAN initiative and the ASEACA project.
Why It's Important?
SEARCA's initiatives are crucial for advancing sustainable and climate-resilient agricultural systems in Southeast Asia. By integrating science, policy, and practice, SEARCA aims to empower communities and strengthen governance. The focus on smart agriculture and biotechnology addresses the evolving needs of the labor market and supports the region's transformation from subsistence farming to high-productivity enterprises. These efforts contribute to global food security and climate change mitigation, positioning Southeast Asia as a leader in agricultural innovation.
What's Next?
SEARCA will continue to foster alliances and share best practices through its training programs and collaborative projects. The upcoming 2026 Agriculture Summit will further explore themes of smart agriculture, carbon neutrality, and biotechnology. SEARCA's commitment to supporting innovative research and capacity building will play a vital role in shaping a resilient and prosperous future for Southeast Asia's agricultural sector.
