What's Happening?
A group of amateur metal detector enthusiasts, led by Eitan Nahum, searched a Tel Aviv beach for a missing cellphone linked to former military advocate general Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi. Her disappearance and subsequent reappearance have intensified
a high-level leak investigation. The search, conducted at Hof HaTzuk, resulted in the discovery of a damaged cellphone near a lifeguard station. The phone, possibly belonging to Tomer-Yerushalmi, appeared intentionally destroyed but had an intact battery, suggesting recent water exposure. The phone was handed over to police for further investigation. The search was motivated by a police tip and a previously announced reward, which the finder, Daniel Shaulov, declined, opting to donate it to Force 100, a group of IDF reservists involved in the investigation.
Why It's Important?
The discovery of the cellphone is significant as it may contain crucial evidence in the ongoing investigation into a leak of sensitive military footage. The footage, allegedly leaked under Tomer-Yerushalmi's direction, showed suspected abuse of a Palestinian detainee and has led to public uproar and criminal investigations. The investigation is focused on a WhatsApp group of senior officers within the Military Advocate General’s Office, with Tomer-Yerushalmi suspected of coordinating the leak. The phone could provide evidence linking other senior officials to the leak, which involves allegations of distributing classified material and interfering with a criminal probe. The outcome of this investigation could have implications for military transparency and accountability.
What's Next?
Tomer-Yerushalmi, currently in custody, is expected to face further questioning. Police plan to confront her with her former spokesperson, who confessed to sending the footage. Investigators believe the phone may reveal additional suspects. If the device is not recoverable, authorities may seek access to Tomer-Yerushalmi’s messaging and email accounts. The investigation's progress will be closely monitored by military and legal authorities, as well as the public, given its potential impact on military operations and legal proceedings.
