What's Happening?
The American Institute of CPAs (AICPA), along with state CPA societies, has initiated a monthlong campaign in November to introduce high school students to the accounting profession. This initiative, known
as the Accounting Opportunities Experience, aims to reach 50,000 students through classroom visits, career fairs, and community events. Concurrently, the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) and the Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) are seeking university graduates for their Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program. This program offers participants a chance to engage in the financial reporting standard-setting process, providing exposure to various professional fields and hands-on experience in technical accounting research and stakeholder outreach.
Why It's Important?
These initiatives are crucial for the future of the accounting profession, as they aim to inspire the next generation of accountants by showcasing the profession's impact beyond numbers. By engaging students early, the AICPA hopes to foster long-term interest in accounting careers, which are vital for economic stability and trust in financial reporting. The FASB and GASB programs provide graduates with unique opportunities to influence financial standards, potentially shaping the future of accounting practices. These efforts could lead to a more robust pipeline of skilled professionals entering the field, addressing potential shortages and enhancing the quality of financial reporting.
What's Next?
Schools are encouraged to nominate candidates for the FASB and GASB Postgraduate Technical Assistant Program, with nominations due by November 30, 2025. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews between January and March 2026, with offers made by March 31, 2026. Successful candidates will begin their roles in July 2026 or January 2027. Meanwhile, the AICPA's initiative will continue throughout November, with CPAs encouraged to participate in local events and utilize resources available on ThisWayToCPA.com.
