A study led by Alice Goddard at Newcastle University has found that summer sunshine alone may not be enough to resolve vitamin D deficiency, particularly in older adults and those with darker skin. The research involved 299 participants in northern England,
examining vitamin D levels from December 2024 to August 2025. Results showed that despite longer daylight hours in summer, vitamin D levels did not significantly improve, especially among ethnic minorities with darker skin. The study highlights the variability in vitamin D production due to factors like age and skin pigmentation, suggesting that sunlight exposure alone may not suffice for adequate vitamin D synthesis.
