DRDO Chairman Dr. Samir V. Kamat has announced that the DRDO is prepared to proceed with the full-scale development of the next-generation Agni-VI missile. This development is part of India's ongoing efforts to enhance its strategic missile capabilities,
building upon the success of the Agni series, which originated under the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme (IGMDP) launched in 1983. The Agni series includes various ballistic missiles such as Agni-I, Agni-II, Agni-III, Agni-IV, Agni-V, and Agni-Prime (Agni-P), each with increasing range and technological sophistication. The Agni-V, for instance, is a three-stage, solid-propellant, long-range ballistic missile with a range of over 5,000 km, featuring a canisterized system for rapid deployment and enhanced survivability. The proposed Agni-VI is expected to incorporate advanced features like greater range, advanced propulsion, and Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicles (MIRVs), which allow a single missile to deliver multiple warheads to different targets.
