What's Happening?
ProVeg China, in collaboration with Jiangnan University, concluded a three-part webinar series focusing on the technical barriers in NeoProtein development. The series attracted over 10,000 participants from various sectors, including research institutions,
universities, and industry. This initiative was part of the NeoProtein Innovation Center of Excellence's efforts to address China's core technical gaps in plant-based, microbial, and cultivated protein. The webinars were structured around the 'Top 10 Technical Challenges in NeoProtein 2025 Blue Paper,' a document developed with input from 48 scientists. The sessions covered microbial protein, plant-based protein, and cultivated protein, highlighting obstacles such as safety, cell line development, and scalability.
Why It's Important?
The development of NeoProtein is crucial for addressing the growing demand for sustainable protein sources in China, the world's largest meat market. The webinar series aimed to translate research roadmaps into commercial progress by fostering active exchanges among researchers, universities, and companies. By identifying and addressing technical bottlenecks, the initiative seeks to accelerate the scale-up of next-generation proteins, which is vital for reducing reliance on traditional meat production. This effort not only supports environmental sustainability but also aligns with global trends towards alternative protein sources.

ProVeg China and Jiangnan University plan to continue their collaboration by convening researchers, policymakers, and industry partners to turn identified priorities into collaborative research and investment opportunities.
