Tim McElroy, business development manager at Shepherd’s Grain, highlighted the benefits of regenerative agriculture during a session at the American Society of Baking’s BakingTech in Chicago. Regenerative agriculture focuses on restoring ecosystem functions
through the natural improvement of carbon, mineral, and water cycles. McElroy explained that traditional farming practices, such as tilling, release carbon, whereas regenerative methods keep plant roots intact, enhancing soil stability and resilience. By increasing soil organic matter by just 1%, water holding capacity can rise by 10,000 gallons per acre, allowing the soil to better manage heavy rainfall without erosion. This approach not only benefits crop production but also supports biodiversity, as evidenced by the return of wildlife like ducks to previously abandoned areas.
