The IT Rules, 2021, mandate intermediaries to observe due diligence and prevent the hosting of unlawful content, including deepfakes. Significant Social Media Intermediaries (SSMIs) are required to deploy automated tools to detect and limit the spread of harmful content. The government has issued multiple advisories to intermediaries, emphasizing compliance with statutory obligations and the responsible handling of sensitive information.
