A recent study published in the journal Molecular Systems Biology has revealed that certain artificial sweeteners can significantly alter the growth of beneficial gut bacteria. The research, conducted using an in vitro model, tested 39 commercially used
sweeteners, including artificial and natural variants, as well as sugar alcohols. The study found that about 75% of these sweeteners affected at least one species of gut bacteria. Notably, the combination of isosteviol, a compound derived from stevia, and the antidepressant duloxetine, was observed to suppress two key gut bacteria. The study highlights the potential for sweeteners to interact with medications, suggesting that these 'mixture effects' warrant further investigation in clinical settings.
