A recent meta-analysis published in JAMA Dermatology indicates that even a single painful, blistering, or severe sunburn can significantly increase the odds of developing cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), a common form of skin cancer. The study,
which analyzed data from 17 studies involving over 321,000 individuals, found that those with a history of medium frequencies of severe sunburns had a 51% higher risk of cSCC, while those with high frequencies saw a 69% increase. Researchers from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and other U.S. institutions conducted this analysis, highlighting that the DNA damage inflicted by UV radiation can have lifelong effects, even after the immediate discomfort of a sunburn subsides. Adrienne Victor, an oncologist at the University of Rochester's Wilmot Cancer Institute, noted that errors during DNA repair can accumulate over time, contributing to cancer development. The study also emphasized that frequent severe sunburns in childhood are particularly dangerous, potentially tripling the risk of cSCC.
