Caprera Canyon, located off the coast of Sardinia, Italy, is a significant underwater ecosystem in the Mediterranean Sea, supporting diverse marine life. Recent explorations led by Italian marine biologist
Ginevra Boldrocchi and the One Ocean Foundation have uncovered threats to this biodiversity due to commercial fishing, maritime traffic, and pollution. Using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV), the team explored depths up to 1,050 meters, revealing the presence of rare sponges, corals, and various fish species, alongside evidence of human impact such as discarded fishing gear and plastic waste. The canyon is currently unprotected, raising concerns about the loss of habitat for endangered species.
