What's Happening?
The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has engaged EY to develop a cloud-based master data management platform as part of its ongoing ICT modernization efforts. This $14 million initiative, known as 'Project Indigo,' aims to upgrade the AEC's election
management systems by providing data validation, enrichment, and distribution services. The platform is designed to handle master data consistently across various applications, preventing data fragmentation and duplication. It will replace legacy systems to meet the growing data needs of stakeholders. Although the platform will play a minor role in the upcoming federal election, it is expected to expand its scope significantly in future elections.
Why It's Important?
This development is crucial for the AEC as it seeks to modernize its election management infrastructure. By implementing a robust data management platform, the AEC aims to improve data quality and operational efficiency, which are vital for maintaining the integrity of electoral processes. The partnership with EY reflects a broader trend of governmental bodies investing in technology to enhance public service delivery. This move could set a precedent for other electoral bodies worldwide, emphasizing the importance of data management in democratic processes.
What's Next?
The AEC's contract with EY is set to run until November 2028, with potential extensions until 2034. As the platform's role expands, it will cover a larger portion of the AEC's systems, potentially influencing how future elections are managed. The completion of the second tranche of Project Indigo by June 2027 will further integrate the new platform into the AEC's operations, paving the way for more comprehensive data management solutions in subsequent electoral cycles.
