What's Happening?
Blackboard is rolling out an update that introduces new functionalities for instructors, primarily focusing on rubric management and student group organization. Instructors can now print or save rubrics as PDFs, a feature useful for offline grading, sharing
criteria with students, and documentation for accreditation or instructional reviews. This allows for greater flexibility in how rubrics are utilized, moving beyond purely digital interaction. Additionally, the update significantly improves the group management search function. Previously, instructors could only search for unassigned students within a group set. The new dual search capability enables instructors to locate any student, whether assigned or unassigned, and simultaneously view their group affiliation. This streamlines the process of making mid-semester team adjustments, addressing issues like stalled groups, schedule conflicts, or student absences more efficiently, even in large courses with numerous fully assigned groups. These updates are expected to be available in Ultra courses around November 5-6, 2026, with a test environment update around November 10, 2026.
Why It's Important?
These Blackboard updates are important for U.S. educational institutions, particularly those utilizing the Ultra platform, as they directly impact the efficiency and effectiveness of teaching and learning processes. The ability to print and save rubrics as PDFs provides instructors with tangible records for student conferences and simplifies compliance with accreditation and instructional review documentation requirements, which are critical for maintaining institutional standards and funding. The enhanced group management search function addresses a common pain point for educators, allowing for quicker and more accurate adjustments to student teams. This improved flexibility can prevent academic disruptions, ensure equitable workload distribution, and support student success by promptly resolving group-related issues. For universities and colleges, these improvements can lead to better administrative workflows, reduced instructor workload, and ultimately, a more organized and responsive learning environment for students across various disciplines.
What's Next?
Faculty using Blackboard Ultra courses can anticipate these updates to be implemented around November 5-6, 2026. A subsequent update to the Ultra test environment is scheduled for approximately November 10, 2026, with release notes to be posted on the 'What's New in Ultra' page. Instructors interested in previewing new features before their full release can request early access by opening an RT ticket. Further information and FAQs regarding Blackboard updates will be disseminated through the 'What's New with Ultra' page and myUMBC. Educational institutions will likely monitor the adoption and impact of these new features, potentially offering training or support to help faculty integrate them into their teaching practices. The ongoing evolution of learning management systems like Blackboard reflects a continuous effort to adapt to the dynamic needs of modern education.
