New York Governor Kathy Hochul and state lawmakers are proposing a new tax on cash home sales in New York City as part of an $8 billion aid package aimed at addressing the city's budget deficit. State Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie confirmed that the tax is
intended to help close the city's financial gap. The proposed tax would apply a 1% levy on cash purchases of real estate valued at $1 million or more within the five boroughs. The tax is expected to generate approximately $160 million for the city.
