The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) and the U.S. Air Force have broken ground on a new Infectious Disease Air Transport (IDAT) facility in Omaha. This first-of-its-kind training center will be dedicated to preparing healthcare and military
personnel for the safe air transport of patients with high-consequence infectious diseases. The facility will feature a C-130 aircraft fuselage, a mockup platform for a Boeing C-17, and a Negatively Pressurized Conex Lite unit, which is a modified shipping container with an advanced air filtration system used for biocontainment air transport. Training will be primarily led by the U.S. Air Force’s Center for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (C-STARS), a joint initiative established in 2018 between UNMC’s Global Center for Health Security and the Air Force’s School of Aerospace Medicine. Planning for the IDAT facility began in 2023, with construction costs covered by multiple federal funding sources. The building is scheduled for occupancy in late 2027.
