What's Happening?
Elon University School of Law has applied for approval from the American Bar Association (ABA) to launch a new full-time J.D. program at Queens University of Charlotte, North Carolina, starting in Fall 2027. The program aims to enroll about 75 students
and will replicate Elon Law's existing curriculum, which is known for its experiential learning approach. This includes a full-time residency-in-practice with a practicing attorney or judge during the second year. The new program will expand Elon Law's presence in North Carolina, offering students the opportunity to study in a city with significant legal and governmental institutions.
Why It's Important?
The introduction of a new full-time J.D. program in Charlotte by Elon Law reflects the growing demand for legal education in rapidly expanding urban areas. By establishing a presence in Charlotte, Elon Law aims to deepen its connections within the legal community and provide more opportunities for students to engage with influential courts and legal services. This expansion could enhance the school's alumni network and increase its influence in the region. Additionally, the program's accelerated timeline allows students to complete their education in two and a half years, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional three-year law programs.
What's Next?
Pending ABA approval, Elon Law plans to begin accepting applications for the new program in August 2026, with the first class starting in Fall 2027. The program will operate from the Queens University of Charlotte campus, either through a merger or a lease agreement. The school will continue to develop its community-connected model, aiming to strengthen relationships with local legal professionals and organizations. The success of this initiative could lead to further expansions or similar programs in other regions.
