What's Happening?
Celebrated conservationists Beverly and Dereck Joubert have reaffirmed their commitment to wildlife protection following a life-threatening buffalo attack in Botswana in 2017. Despite the incident, which
left Beverly with severe injuries, the couple has continued their conservation work, including managing Great Plains Conservation, a safari operation spanning Botswana, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. Their efforts focus on preserving nature and deterring poaching, employing around 1,000 people and managing over 1.5 million acres. The Jouberts have also been involved in large-scale animal translocations, moving elephants and rhinos to safer areas to maintain genetic diversity and prevent culling.
Why It's Important?
The Jouberts' dedication to conservation highlights the critical role of private initiatives in wildlife protection and sustainable tourism. Their work supports local economies and provides employment, while also addressing the decline of big cat populations and other wildlife. The couple's efforts in translocation projects demonstrate innovative approaches to conservation, ensuring the survival of endangered species. Their story underscores the importance of resilience and commitment in the face of adversity, inspiring others in the conservation community to continue their efforts despite challenges.
