The European Union is considering a new law aimed at electrifying vehicle fleets of large companies, which could significantly increase electric vehicle (EV) sales by 2030. According to research by Transport & Environment (T&E), the proposed law could account
for 57% of the EV sales needed by carmakers to meet their 2030 EU CO2 targets. The law would require large companies to electrify their fleets, potentially delivering 2 million new EV sales. However, this outcome depends on increasing the proposed fleet electrification targets. Currently, the EU proposal sets a 45% target for member states to electrify new cars registered by large companies, which T&E argues is insufficient. The research suggests that increasing the target to 69% and excluding plug-in hybrids could secure a significant share of EV sales for major carmakers like BMW, Volkswagen, and Volvo.
