Stephen Gerard Utz, a respected law professor, passed away at the age of 78 on December 9 after a long illness. Utz was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and graduated from Louisiana State University with honors in philosophy. He was a Marshall Scholar
at the University of Cambridge, earning a Ph.D. in the Philosophy of Science. Utz later pursued law at the University of Texas, serving as an editor of the Texas Law Review. He clerked for Judge Joseph T. Sneed and practiced tax law in Washington, DC. Utz was a professor at the University of Connecticut School of Law for nearly four decades, specializing in tax law and policy. He also taught at the Free University in Berlin. Utz is survived by his daughters and partner, Ellen Keane.
