What's Happening?
Canada is a member of the Group of Seven (G7), an informal grouping of advanced democracies that meets to coordinate approaches to global economic stability, international peace and security, and other transnational issues. Canada assumed the presidency
of the G7 for the seventh time on January 1, 2025, and will host the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, from June 15 to 17, 2025. Canada's presidency focuses on three priorities: protecting communities and the world, building energy security and accelerating the digital transition, and securing future partnerships.
Why It's Important?
Canada's presidency of the G7 allows it to advance both domestic and international priorities on the global stage. By focusing on energy security and digital transition, Canada aims to address critical issues that impact global economic stability and security. The presidency also provides an opportunity for Canada to engage with international partners and stakeholders to develop an agenda that resonates with Canadians and addresses pressing global challenges.
What's Next?
Canada will host various meetings as part of its presidency, including a G7 Foreign Ministers’ meeting and a G7 Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors’ meeting. These meetings will provide opportunities for G7 members and invited guests to discuss critical global issues and coordinate responses. Canada's presidency will culminate in the G7 Leaders’ Summit, where leaders will address the world's most pressing issues.
Beyond the Headlines
Canada's engagement with domestic stakeholders, including Indigenous partners, provinces, and territories, highlights the importance of inclusive dialogue in shaping the G7 agenda. This approach ensures that Canada's presidency reflects diverse perspectives and addresses issues that resonate with Canadians.
